The best free game I've ever played was Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory.

Man, the best free game is Uniball. http://www.uniball-central.net/
It was made by the guy who did the graphics for ARC (Attack Retrieve Capture) which was bought by Sierra. The guy now does artwork for Popcap games. Anyway, UB is a lot like hockey, basketball, soccer so if you like sports it's a cool game.
